Use Water Efficiently

Water efficiency refers to practices, products, or systems that use less water than traditional products or systems without sacrificing performance. Water-efficient products can include graywater use and low-flow water fixtures (such as toilets or faucets). Water-efficient practices can include landscaping with plants that require less water, use of rainwater for irrigation, and stormwater management.

The 16th Session of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development was held in New York in May 2008. This year, the session was dedicated to reviewing issues related to Agriculture, Rural Development, Land, Drought, Desertification and Africa. The recent World Food Summit, held in Rome by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), provided a forum for active debate about the role of high oil prices, biofuels, changing consumption patterns and erratic weather in driving up the prices of basic foods. But oddly, participants paid less attention to the alarming decline in the availability of water over the last few decades.

Over 7,000 Tanzanians Give Their Opinions on livelihood, education, health, governance, infrastructure, well-being, citizen participation, and more. This report is the largest perception survey conducted in Mainland Tanzania to date. 7,879 Tanzanians, aged from 7 to 90 years, from ten mainland regions, were asked for their opinion on aspects of economic progress, their standard of living, quality of and access to economic and social services, and trends in governance.

North-eastern Brazil is the most densely populated, semi-arid region in the world. Around 11 million people do not have a permanent supply of clean drinking water. Most people have to walk long distances in search of muddy water holes that have been contaminated by animals.

This technical brief from Oxfam outlines the usual testing regime as recommended for use by OXFAM staff in emergency situations.

It focuses on what is realistic during the various stages of an emergency, whilst also ensuring that water is safe for the affected populations. It looks at microbiological, physical and chemical testing parameters. It does not replace the water testing kit instruction materials but is complementary and they should be read together.
